VALPO MENS BASKETBALL STARTS 2010-2011 WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN
The Valparaiso University Crusaders Men’s B-Ball squad opened the 2010-11 season against the Indiana University Northwest Redhawks with one of the most impressive wins I have ever seen.
Not because they scored 111pts, not because they won by 46 points, it was because of the 29 Assists in the game – yes 29 assists!
It was amazing watching this team play so unselfishly.
Having a birds-eye view from court-side, the passes were precise, crisp and dead-on! This team showed that when they aren’t lighting it up from 3 point range, they can move the ball and get easy points in the paint. The Crusaders had 70 points in the paint - some contested, some not – none-the-less, they still were making the shots!
Senior Guard Howard Little was tenacious on the offensive and defensive boards and ended the night with 17 points along with Senior Center Cory Johnson who also ended the night with 17 (and came back to the game after sustaining a “bloody gash” to his head midway through the second half). Ryan Broekhoff ended the game with 18 points and 3 block shots and Junior standout Guard Brandon Wood ended the game as the leading scorer with 20 points and 6 assists. My standout player in this game was Freshman Kevin Van Wijk. This kid has no limits and no fear – inside he will bump, fight, scratch, and bang to get rebounds both offensive and defensively and he will be the key player when Valpo heads to Kansas.
There was really no question as to the outcome of the game once Valpo took a 14-0 run to start the game, they never looked back. The final numbers indicated a very well played game - shooting 58% from the field and 30% from downtown, 69% from the charity stripe. That equaled a season opening WIN for the Crusaders.
Now the “true test” and “reality” will soon be thrown at the Crusaders as they head west to Lawrence, Kansas to play the #4 Ranked Kansas Jayhawks (some analysts see this Jayhawk team as a potential Final 4 contender).
There is some added drama and excitement for this game as Mario Little (Senior Power forward for the Jayhawks) will finally get his chance to play against his cousin Howard Little (Senior Guard for the Crusaders). This will be a very memorable Family Reunion:) The Jayhawks are led by their 2 star players Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris. These two will be plenty to handle for the Crusaders if they are planning on sending early season shockwaves with an upset in Lawrence. What will it take for the Crusaders to get this upset?
“A PERFECT GAME”

See ya in Kansas!
