The Valparaiso University Crusaders Men's Basketball TEAM ended the regular season tonight with a Win against the Penguins of Youngstown State 67 to 59, in which 2 seniors also finished their careers at the ARC. Seniors Urule Igbavoda and Jake Diebler both ended their 4 years with a Win. They also were privileged to play during their four years the Number 1 Teams in the Country. They played North Carolina 2 times, plus Duke and Ohio State.

This season has been a trying and growing experience for the Crusaders and I have noticed one thing, this team is gelling! I have seen freshman Cameron Witt develop into a solid center. Freshman guard Erik Buggs finally got it all back together tonight. Michael Rodgers has now had seven (7) straight games of a double-double and Howard Little continues to show his leadership on the court every game. Little has been the cement to this team and with him returning next year I am anticipating a very good year.                                                                  

So...lets look at next year. It is an early prediction, but here is my year in advance outlook. The Crusaders have an incredible recruiting class coming in! Also they have a 7 foot transfer from UNLV that will be eligible in December, a pure shooting guard!  Of course Brandon McPherson,  a seasoned player, red-shirted and returning for one more year! So here it is... The Crusaders will finish in the Top 3... and possibly, if everyone stays healthy, they could win the Horizon League outright!

So now it is on to Wright State University to face the Raiders in the first round of the Horizon League Tourney. IF the Crusaders can put together a solid 40 minutes of play, there is the chance we may see the March Madness begin early with a major upset. It will take every player to play well!  Think about this, no one is expecting the Crusaders to walk into to Wright State's home floor and win. The pressure is on Wright State. So play loose - play smart - play hard - and play for all 40 minutes and hopefully Tuesday night the Crusaders will leave victorious!

  It was our first time to Notre Dame to see the Fighting Irish play a men's Basketball game, against The State University of New Jersey Rutgers - Scarlet Knights.....and what a wonderful experience it was!

Albeit, we were running late due to the fact we were still filming with ABC News Night-line for an upcoming show.

So, we walked in about 9 minutes into the first half, and I looked up and saw  the score ->

Rutgers 21 - Notre Dame 10, then thought - WHAT ! are you kidding me ???

Notre Dame got the lead down to 5 by the half. Whatever was said in the locker room by the Irish Head Coach Mike Brey must have worked,  as the Irish then built and opened up what looked like an mountain that Rutgers could not over come. The Irish came out running up and down in an NBA West Coast Style offense, building a lead to as much as 17!!!!                                                 

 BUT WAIT -----> The Coaching strategy then changed after this big lead...changing the game's complexion!

The Irish - at the direction of Head Coach, go into a 100% slow down motion offense! Total slowdown - how's this - lets run the shot clock down to about 5 seconds before we do anything? Well, this strategy totally back fired (why in the world you change what is working, I will never know). The 17 pt. lead got trimmed to only 2 points,  (I was thinking, if they loose this game, not only is the Big Dance out of the question but so would be the NIT).

Well, they held on & prevailed with a win that should have never had to go down to the last 30 seconds.

     It was a wonderful experience to be in the Joyce Center,  a very loud facility.  We also enjoyed the WOW of the large cheer-leading squads routines during the game and at half-time!

 I would definitely enjoy taking another 40 minute trip to this South Bend, Indiana - College campus  and watch the Irish again!

   The VALPO Crusaders posted a great comeback win last Saturday against Davidson Wildcats in their Homecoming Game in front of over 4300 fans. It started out horrible for the Crusader's as they fell behind early and found themselves down 21-6 at half...But,

Leave it to Coach Stacy to motivate the team for the second half.  What a 2nd half it was, as the Crusaders forced overtime and eventually beat Davidson College 35-29. The Crusaders rushed for an impressive 351 yards, compared to Davidson's 151, and that was the difference. Ross Wiemer of the Crusaders rushed for 170 yards and 3 TD's!

So now it is on to Saturday, October 18, 2008 when the Butler Bulldogs take I 65 North 145 miles to visit Brown Field at 1pm for the "in state" rivalry for the HOOSIER HELMET....it should be a great game!

 Last Weekend, we had the opportunity to watch Jeff's Nephew participate in

Kohl's FALL "BEST OF THE MIDWEST" Soccer Tournaments

held at the

 Hallmark Convention and Sports Complex

located @

2105 E 181st Ave Hebron, IN 46341

Besides perfect Indian Summer weather, the grass and conditions of the many fields (over 120 acres dedicated to the game of soccer to be developed in phases) was impeccable.

Located off Interstate 65 In Lake County ,Northwest Indiana (State Road 2 exit West toward Lowell, IN ) the 120 acres of land dedicated entirely to soccer fields will be developed in phases.

Saturday's drive from Valparaiso was only about 20 minutes to the dozens of fields nestled in a rural setting among Indiana farmlands.

Pulling into park, we were amazed to see many license plates from all around the Midwest of families attending this Indiana hosted event including : Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri and Nebraska.

Scheduling of the games was well planned and spaced and allowed us to visit the various tents which housed various food and beverage concessions, sporting goods sales, vendors and exhibitors!

You could even lease a demo SONY high speed sports action camera for free and take home a DVD with your child's game action shots!

 Although our Nephew's team lost their morning game, after a recess for a big lunch at Merrillville, IN Portillos/Barnelli's Pasta Bowl they came back in the afternoon to not only win, but shut out the opposing team! .......

I told my brother-in-law - you have to feed them lots of food before each game :) 

Soccer Sponsors included both the Chicago Magic and Indiana Magic Soccer Clubs.

 With developing facilities such as this, NorthWest Indiana is a place to consider if you are relocating and your children are avid about playing the sport of soccer!
